A few weeks ago we attended a spaghetti dinner at my youngest’s preschool, and there were these adorable Pretzel Fishing Rods. This post contains affiliate links.

The kids all went crazy for them. My husband bought a couple for our two youngest. My son immediately used it for sword fighting.

What do you need to make Pretzel Fishing Rods?

Pretzel Fishing Rods | The TipToe Fairy (2)

You’ll need a few things:

  • Pretzel Rods
  • Pull n Peel Twizzlers
  • Swedish Fish and Gummy Worms (or just one kind)
  • melting chocolate

How do you make Pretzel Fishing Rods?

Using 2 pieces of Pull N Peel Twizzler, wrap the pretzel as the pictures show.

For the worms – at the end of the Twizzler, wrap it around the gummi worm and tie it in a knot.

For the fish: Melt the chocolate per instructions. Dip about 1 inch of the Twizzler end in the chocolate then place it on the back of the fish.

Freeze the fishing rods with fish attached with chocolate for 15 minutes.

For Valentine’s, you can package them up in these pretzel bags and attach the card.

I simply looped one twizzler piece over the “fishing line” piece and then pushed the ends under the loops. It’s nice when something works out like you planned in your head.

Once you get going, you can make about a dozen in 10 minutes. With the gummi worm version, no chocolate is required. I only used the chocolate to attach the twizzler to Swedish fish.

Love this, but the twizzlers keep breaking after about a minute of being tied and I’m not stretching them at all. Any suggestions?

In my experience, the Twizzlers have to be fresh, which isn’t always in your control unfortunately. I’ve found if I keep them unopened in the package store in the fridge until the day I want to use them, it keeps them fresher. I also have found if I end up buying a package that’s been sitting on the shelf at the store awhile, they can end up breaking. Another thing I found is trying different brands. We have a local candy store that sells licorice laces that work sometimes better than the Twizzlers. I also like to munch on Twizzlers, so I have to make myself not open the package until right when I want to make the fishing rods.

Another tip might be to use candy melts to glue the Twizzlers to the pretzels. I have a friend who makes them that way where she dips the end of the Twizzlers and the end of the pretzel in melted chocolate to hold them together. I don’t think it looks as pretty, but it might be easier to attach that way.
