LATEST: 4 tornadoes touch down in Pittsburgh region (2024)

PITTSBURGH — Multiple tornado warnings were issued Wednesday night and potential tornado damage was widespread through Allegheny, Westmoreland, Greene and Indiana counties. Crews will look at the type of damage, the damage path and what types of structures were damaged and then assign an EF Scale tornado rating once the wind speed estimates have been calculated.

UPDATE 11:15 p.m.:

A fourth tornado touched down in Indiana County, near the Blairsville area.

UPDATE 2:00 p.m.

Another tornado touched down in Westmoreland County, the National Weather Service said. This one was near the area of Trafford and Harrison City.

UPDATE 1:03 p.m.

An EF-1 tornado touched down in Oakdale during Wednesday’s storms, the National Weather Service said. This is the second confirmed tornado in the Pittsburgh area during the system.

UPDATE 12:09 p.m.

A preliminary EF-2 tornado touched down in Westmoreland County during Wednesday’s storms, the National Weather Service said.

UPDATE 9:40 a.m.

Duquesne Light crews are working to assess the storm. Once that is complete, the company will make more information available, including estimated times of restoration.

About 8,000 customers in Allegheny County are without power, DLC says, and about 4,800 customers in Westmoreland County are still affected, West Penn says.

UPDATE 6:17 a.m.

A section of Route 148 is closed in North Versailles due to downed trees.

The road is closed between Route 30 and Crooked Run Road.

UPDATE 5:30 a.m.

Crews from Verizon work on McLaughlin Run Road in Bridgeville, replacing at least one utility pole that was knocked down in the storm.

UPDATE 6/27/24 5 a.m.

There are still over 21,000 customers impacted by power outages in the Pittsburgh area this morning, with the bulk of the customers in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. Duquesne Light says about 15,000 customers in Allegheny are impacted and West Penn Power reports about 5,670 in Westmoreland are impacted.

UPDATE 11:25 p.m.

Duquesne Light and West Penn Power are still reporting more than 15,000 outages each. More than 10,000 of West Penn Power’s outages are in Westmoreland County.

UPDATE 10:10 p.m.

The National Weather Service will survey storm damage from potential tornadoes in the area on Thursday and Friday.

UPDATE 9 p.m.

The Tornado Warnings in Westmoreland, Indiana, Greene and Fayette counties have expired.

All Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have expired.

A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for all of Allegheny County until 9:30 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties until 10 p.m.

UPDATE 8:50 p.m.

Power outages continue to rise throughout western Pennsylvania. As of around 8:50 p.m., Duquesne Light Company reported more than 30,000 people without power.

A Tornado Warning has been issued for parts of Westmoreland and Indiana counties until 9 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Westmoreland and Indiana counties until 9 p.m.

The Tornado Warning in Westmoreland County has been extended until 8:45 p.m.

UPDATE 8:15 p.m.

The Bridgeville Police Department says McLaughlin Run Road is closed between Bower Hill Road and Baldwin Street because of a downed utility pole. Bower Hill Road is restricted to one lane between McLaughlin Run Road and Railroad Street.

UPDATE 8:05 p.m.

A Tornado Warning has been issued west central Westmoreland County until 8:30 p.m.

The warning initially included part of Allegheny County, but now is only for portions of Westmoreland County.

UPDATE 8 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Southeastern Allegheny County and Southwestern Westmoreland County until 8:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service says it’s particularly concerned about a portion of the storm south of Monroeville as “very strong wind” is expected along that line of the storm. They urge anyone in the warning to take cover.

UPDATE 7:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service has allowed a Tornado Warning for all of Allegheny County, including Pittsburgh to expire.

The Flash Flood Warning and Severe Thunderstorm Warning are ongoing.

UPDATE 7:35 p.m.

A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for all of Allegheny County until 9:30 p.m.

UPDATE 7:30 p.m.

A Tornado Warning has been issued for central Allegheny County until 8 p.m., including for the city of Pittsburgh.

UPDATE 7:25 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Allegheny County, Northern Washington County and Northwestern Westmoreland County until 8:15 p.m.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued two Severe Thunderstorm Watches for parts of Western Pennsylvania.

One watch ends at 9 p.m. and includes Armstrong and Butler counties.

The other watch ends at 10 p.m. and includes Allegheny, Indiana, Beaver, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

It will be warm and humid ahead of thunderstorms later today. Highs will reach the low to mid-80s. Scattered showers and storms are possible this afternoon but especially during the evening hours tonight. Storms could become strong to severe, make sure to stay weather-aware through the day. Severe storms could bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding concerns, hail and an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.

Behind this system the humidity will decrease. Expect plenty of sunshine and pleasant conditions Thursday with highs near 80 degrees. It will be warmer into the weekend with the chance of showers and storms Saturday into Sunday morning.
