Ambulance, Tractor-Trailer Crash in Duplin County on June 12, 2024 (2024)

Albertson, NC (June 12, 2024) - According to local news sources, an EMS provider has been charged following a crash involving an ambulance and a tractor-trailer. The incident, which took place at the intersection of Highway 111 and Sheep Pasture Road in the Albertson area, sent two first responders to the hospital. The crash happened on the morning of June 12, around 7:15 a.m.

The EMS provider, identified as the driver of the Duplin County ambulance, was charged with failure to yield. The ambulance, which was transporting a patient on a non-emergency call and therefore did not have its lights and sirens activated, pulled out in front of a truck carrying chickens. The truck driver attempted to stop but could not avoid the collision.

Two EMS workers were airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville with serious injuries, while the patient and the truck driver were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. State Trooper Mark Myers stated that the ambulance driver did stop at the stop sign but failed to yield the right of way. He noted, "She was lucky that the driver of the truck hit the cabin or the rear cabin of the EMS truck. Because like I said, if he’d hit her in the door, we could be talking about a completely different situation."

The accident has significant implications for Duplin County EMS services, as they are already facing staffing shortages. Brandon McMahon, Director of Duplin County EMS, mentioned, “It’ll take them out of work for a while. So, you know we’re already battling staffing shortages. So, yes this will affect us as far as staffing goes.”

The crash is a stark reminder of the dangers EMTs face daily. James McArthur of Pitt County Emergency Medical Services commented on the inherent risks of the job, stating that EMTs put their lives on the line with the hope of saving others.

Local authorities, including Albertson and Pleasant Grove fire departments, responded to the scene, along with additional EMS units from Duplin, Onslow, Pender, and Wayne counties. The N.C. State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
